Laos covers 236, 800 km², and has a population of around 7.1 million, which makes it the 4th least populated country in South East Asia. Laos’ population is made up of no less than 68 different ethnicities classed into 3 distinctive groups: Lao Loum (Lowland Lao), Lao Theung (Midland Lao), and Lao Sung (High Mountain Lao).
The Mekong river traverses through Laos, acting as a veritable artery of this territory, serving both as a means of communication and a pantry. The terrain is very steep, with narrow valleys, mountainous terrain and plains.
Laos’ territory is largely influenced by the monsoon. The tropical climate is characterised with a dry season (November to April) and a wet season (May to October). Temperatures fluctuate from 40° along the Mekong river and 5° in the mountainous terrains.
Thanks to its rugged terrain, Laos is one of the countries in South East Asia with the least deteriorated ecosystem. The abundant forests allow for the conservation of numerous species: monkeys, squirrels, leopards, elephants, antelopes, tigers, reptiles, birds, etc. without forgetting the legendary freshwater dolphins found in the Mekong.
