Description:

Moc Chau Plateau is situated about 200 km northwest of Hanoi (5 hours) and near the former French national road 6. It can be visited separately as an escape from Hanoi or integrated into a longer northwestern loop.

Moc Chau features a diversity of local cultures, inhabited predominantly by the Thai ethnic minority (White Thais and Black Thais) together with the H’Mongs and other ethnic groups, more recent settlers on this fertile and green land.

The beautiful natural setting inspires nice trekking possibilities across surrounding ethnic villages passing waterfalls, tea hill plantations, rice terraces, corn fields, endless plum gardens, old forests and all kinds of flowers, depending on the season. The local people are remarkably friendly and hospitable.

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau - Moc Chau

In the morning, depart from Hanoi for Mai Chau, the valley of the Thai ethnic minority (135 km, 4 hours). The road is scenic and offers spectacular landscapes. Upon arrival, walk around Lac and Poom Coong villages, meet and chat with local Thai people and appreciate their handicrafts.

After at local house, continue to Moc Chau. Arrive at homestay, meet the host family and settle in.

Free time at leisure to walk around this remote Thai village, opportunity to meet friendly locals returning from the farm.

Dinner and accommodation at homestay.

Day 2: Easy trek around the village - Tea Plantation

A soft trek around the base up to the hill, passing corn farms, orchards, rice terraced fields and natural streams. On the top there used to be a French military camp now turned into a tea hill plantation. At this lookout, throw a panoramic view down to the Thai villages nestled in the peaceful valley. Here you can easily meet locals harvesting tea as it is a year-round activity. Beautifully green tea hill plantations are everywhere.

Continue with a visit to the tea factory, learn about processing and taste some freshest Oolong tea of the highest quality.

Rest of the time at leisure to absorb the village atmosphere.

Dinner and accommodation at homestay.

Day 3: H'mong village - Hanoi

After breakfast bid farewell to the host family.

Drive out of the valley and stop by Phieng Canh, a H’Mong ethnic minority village. Take a short walk throughout the village to appreciate the local way of life, farming and housing.

Continue to Hanoi with lunch en route. Arrive in Hanoi around 5pm.
